Note: Casson, who spent decades working at the graphic art firm, was the art director of the ambitious Sampson-Matthews program during its first 16 years. In all, he contributed six designs, this work for the early wartime program. A full page reproduction of this work is illustrated on p. 28 of “Art for War and Peace” (Sigvaldason & Steedman; 2015).

Note: Gauthier worked in the art department of Sampson-Matthews for 37 years and was well respected as both an artist and designer; he was a friend and regular sketching partner of A. J. Casson. This single contribution to the Sampson-Matthews collection appeared in the second catalogue “100 Canadian Paintings”. The scope of the program had by now expanded, bringing Canadian art into many public spaces (including schools, hospitals, libraries, military buildings etc.). A full-page reproduction of this work is illustrated on p. 174 of “Art for War and Peace” (Sigvaldason & Steedman; 2015).
