FAQS: Our consignment and selling process

Review our FAQs to get a better understanding of our consignment process.

If you have questions that aren’t covered here, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Can I visit you in person to receive an estimate?

In order to serve our clientele efficiently and to our best capacity, Hodgins accepts consignments by appointment only.

We encourage submissions of consignments through our online form, or via email. Sending images of your artwork online allows us to review and provide feedback efficiently. Booking an appointment ensures that we are prepared for you and your artwork to arrive.

Don’t worry – if you are unable to send us images, we are always happy to review work in person. Contact us by phone or email today to set up a time to review your artwork.

What happens after I receive a pre-sale estimate?

Once you have received your estimate and have decided that you would like to sell with us, we will complete a consignment contract that lists your pieces, and sets forth the terms and fees for the services that Hodgins will provide. We will then schedule with you to receive the work.

How do I get the artwork to you?

The consignor is responsible for bringing the property to Hodgins, or having it delivered on their behalf. View our list of trusted art handlers and shippers.

What information will I receive once I consign?

When we receive the work, you will sign a consignment contract that outlines the Hodgins terms and conditions and commission rates.

Once the work is examined and catalogued, we will send you an official catalogue listing, including estimates.

When and how do I get paid?

By law, consignors must be paid for items sold at auction within 21 days of the sale. Hodgins deposits all monies from sales into a Trust Account on behalf of the consignor.

Each consignor receives a complete accounting of the sale, listing each item, the amount it sold for, the amount of the commission and the amount of the net cheque for sold prices less our commission.

Can I request a reserve price for my art consignment?

The reserve price of a lot is the minimum hammer price that an artwork is allowed to sell for.

Hodgins will consult with you and provide you with current market feedback to determine a reserve price for each artwork at auction.
