Title: WHITEHORSE MILL- AT SUSSEX

Medium: watercolour on paper laid on board

Dimensions: 11 x 14.5 in. (27.9 x 36.8 cm)

Notes:

signed twice recto; titled verso
Note: Between 1924 and 1928, Leighton sketched the English countryside, painting pastoral landscapes and historic windmills. Having just been retained as an artist for the Canadian Pacific Company, Leighton began his visits to Canada during this time, finalizing a move in 1929. These British scenes formed a large part of Leighton’s first Canadian exhibition. The British windmills closely parallel Leighton’s later paintings of grain elevators in their composition, and interplay with the figures around them.
