In 1927, Phillips headed to the West Coast with the goal of sketching, and visiting his sister in Alert Bay. During this trip, he traveled with his brother-in-law, by boat, to several Siwash and Kwakiutl communities. His sketches of the villages, totems and zunuks provided Philips with inspiration for years to come.
