Title: LE PICADOR II (from LOS TOROS AVEC PICASSO)

Date: 1961

Medium: 24 colour lithograph on paper (book edition of 125)

Dimensions: 8 x 10.5 in. (20.3 x 26.7 cm)

Notes:

dated twice in the stone
Provenance: Corporate collection William H. Meeker, Hallmark Cards, Toronto; de Cinque Graphic Art, Philadelphia
dated twice in the stone
Reference: Mourlot 350, Bloch 1017; Cramer 113
Note: Le Picador II was one of 4 lithographs created for “Los Toros Avec Picasso” (Sauret), all initially in a single colour (black). When it was suggested to Picasso that he might want to add some colour to the image, he proceeded to use every colour in a box of 24 wax crayons. The outcome is Picasso’s most colourful lithograph, surprising even the artist in its successful printing. The two dates relate to the initial and 24-colour version.
