Medium: gelatin silver print
Dimensions: 19.75 x 15.75 in. (50.2 x 40 cm)
Notes:

Collections: National Gallery of Canada; Chicago Art Institute; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
Note: Archie Belaney was born in England and moved to Canada in 1906. He soon became entrenched in the native culture and took on the identity of Grey Owl. He married a native woman, lived as a tribesman and began to write and champion native and environmental causes. When his true identity was discovered after his death, there was public outcry and controversy. He is now considered the father of Canadian ecology. This portrait was taken in 1936 as almost a full-length figure. It was initially printed in 1963 as only a detail of the face.
