Title: DEFORMED DESTITUTES OF INDIA (FROM PACEM IN TERRIS)

Date: 1969

Medium: ink heightened with white on paper

Dimensions: 19.5 x 25.5 in. (49.5 x 64.8 cm)

Notes:

monogrammed
Provenance: The Issacs Gallery, Toronto
Note: This series of drawings was used to illustrate the poem of the same title written by Kurelek’s missionary friend, Father Murray Abraham, who operated a school near Darjeeling, India. The film “Pacem in Terris” was produced in 1971. In his typed notes, verso, Kurelek writes “This is a composite of the various unfortunates I saw on my tour of Indian cities. This is to go with the verse ‘every human being has the right to human integrity’ and ‘every human being has the right to clothing’…”. He goes on to describe the living conditions and sights he saw in detail.
