Note: In the summer of 1951 Townsend was invited as an international guest artist to teach at the Banff School of Fine Art. Following this first visit to Canada, he began to develop abstract compositions based on the Alberta landscape which he continued over a ten year period. Influenced by the Canadian landscape, Townsend would go on to spend significant time in Canada until his death in Banff in 1973. While in Canada, he taught at both the University of Alberta in Edmonton and at the Banff School of Fine Art (where he was on the faculty for 22 years); he toured Canada extensively on various assignments, and lectured at numerous universities. William Townsend was very influential in promoting contemporary Canadian art both in Canada and in England.
