Vic Cicansky, born and based in Regina, is an internationally-respected and collected artist, recently granted the Order of Canada (2009). His clay and bronze works are inspired by his passion for gardening, one that found its roots in his grandmother’s garden when he was a child. His whimsical sculpture often incorporates his sense of humour, and strongly reflects his prairie culture.
In addition to focusing on his own work, for over 20 years Cicansky has contributed to the artistic education of others, teaching at the University of Regina, the Banff School of Fine Arts, the University of California (Davis), and at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He has also been a guest lecturer at universities across Canada and the United States.
“The focus of my work is the backyard garden. My work is about a place that’s close to my heart, a place that inspires me, that energizes me and gives me pleasure…I still plant a backyard garden. But the garden that consumes me, the garden I plant today is the ‘Garden of the Mind’. That garden exists somewhere between nature and the imagination. It’s a place that goes beyond soil, plants and insects. It’s a rough and wild garden where ideas grow and hybridize. It’s this tangled garden that provides me with the rich source of ideas that I interpret and organize into my own universe of personal expression.” – Vic Cicansky
