Parr is the oldest living man among the Kingnaimuit, the last of the great kayakmen. He has long white hair and a wide smile. Years ago he lost part of his feet from freezing. He has known hunger and starvation as well as great times of plenty when a single day’s catch of walrus, whale and seal meat could often be measured in tons.
Parr has a rough direct style that is instantly recognizable. His drawing shows two men hauling on strong sealskin lines. They pull a walrus out of the water onto the ice, a feat of strength much admired by Eskimos. The white line on the lower part of the walrus’ body represents the water.
