Nicholas de Grandmaison immigrated to Canada in 1923, moving late that year to Winnipeg, where he remained until about 1930. Here, the young artist joined the Arts Club of Winnipeg and obtained steady work at Brigdens, a large commercial art firm. During his early years, prior to encountering the Indigenous subjects that would come to define his work, Nicholas de Grandmaison often undertook portrait work. Commissions were often received from within political and social circles, and included portraits of several Chief Justices. This work is a rare and accomplished exemplar from this time period.
