Bates first travelled overseas as a child in 1912, on an extended family trip. Later, he spent much of the 1930s living in London, followed by a year in Europe with the Middlesex regiment after enlisting, and 5 years as a German prisoner of war. Bates did not return to Europe again until 1958/59 (this time with his wife Charlotte). On this trip he revisited may sites he had seen prior to the War and saw Italy for the first time. Bates found time to work during this leisurely trip, taking many notes and making sketches to develop into paintings upon their return home.
