In a 1972 interview with Terry Guernsey, Bates commented: “I’ve always done landscapes, always enjoyed it very much. I get a great deal of satisfaction from doing it…I’m very pleased that landscape painting is becoming popular again.” Living in Calgary, with its proximity to the prairies and the foothills, allowed Bates to feel connected to a non-urban landscape. Bates painted this landscape the year that he left Calgary for Victoria – perhaps with a little nostalgia, or for posterity. His use of dark, muted colours emphasizes the starkness and isolation of the landscape, and acts to accentuate the vertical lines of the bare trees in the foreground, along with the one lone star in the evening sky.
