Of this piece, Jay Contway writes:

“On the early Montana ranches, cowboys lived differently. After 30 years of gathering, a cowboy could put all he owned into his bedroll on one packhorse. He traveled light but he had everything he needed. Only a handful of cowboys living today have rolled up their belongings in a bedroll and traveled by horseback.

Ray Krone, a retired rancher and cowboy in Montana, used a round-up wagon on his ranch in eastern Montana long after other ranches stopped this practice. He took the time to show me how this style of bedroll was made and how it was packed on a horse.”
