Provenance: Former collection of Margaret and Dr. Leslie Mullen, Calgary, and passed down, by descent, to the current owner. Dr. Mullen was employed at the Baker Memorial Sanatorium, where Janet Mitchell spent almost a year recovering from Tuberculosis in 1956. Dr. Mullen is remembered for encouraging patients to pursue their talents while in his care. During the early part of her stay, Janet Mitchell found the inactivity difficult and requested her paints. She was permitted increasingly longer periods of painting time, as her health permitted, and produced approximately 100 oil paintings alone during the time in his care. Janet Mitchell remained long-time friends with the Mullen family, who have fond memories of visiting Janet and her step-mother, Maude, over the years. This painting is likely an earlier work, gifted to the Mullens at a later point in time; the address on the back of the painting lists the artist’s Sunnyside home, in which she resided until 1949.
