Krieghoff was inspired by the common scenes he saw in the countryside surrounding him. He was one of the first artists to document the everyday experience in Quebec, both native and habitant.
His scenes commonly represented the hazards and difficulties encountered due to harsh winter conditions. Travellers encountering a blizzard would have to find their way through blinding wind and snow, whether on snowshoe or by horse and sleigh. With obstacles in the way, wayward crosses and rail fences would help them find their way.
