Provenance: Former collection of the late Alfred Fanthom (Calgary AB), and by descent through the family. Alfred Fanthom was a sniper during WWI. Having returned to Calgary with his health compromised from gas exposure, he took on custodial work at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art and the Coste House. Here, he made friendships with many of the artists and instructors. This piece was obtained directly from Leighton, who made his move to Canada permanent in 1929, upon agreeing to head the Institute’s Art Department, a position he held until 1935.
