[1909-1996]
William Arthur Winter, celebrated for his nostalgic city scenes and for his portraits of youth, was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1909. Winter attended the Winnipeg School of Art in the 1920s, studying under Frank Johnston and L.L. Fitzgerald while he was there, and went on to work at Brigden's of Winnipeg in 1930.
Winter's early career was focused on commercial art: he worked at Brigden's from 1930-35, and then moved to Toronto in 1937. In Toronto, he founded Wookey, Winter, Bush with fellow artists Lesley Wookey and Jack Bush in 1942, and the firm produced a number of memorable compositions for MacLean's and New World Illustrated.
In 1955, Winter retired from commercial art to focus on his art career. Through the 50's and 60's, he produced a number of murals for the Canadian Pacific Railway, Seagram's and more; in the 1960s he spent time teaching at the Ontario College of Art.
Winter moved to England to live with his daughter in 1994, and passed away in 1996.
