Note: This painting is illustrated in the gallery invitation card for the exhibition (Oct. 21-Nov 1, 1986) and on the artist’s biography page from the time. Both promotional items accompany the painting.; St. Ann’s Church, built in 1854, was for many years the heart of Griffintown, a working class, Irish-catholic Montreal community. The church was demolished in 1970 and the location is now the site of Parc Griffintown-St-Ann. This nostalgic scene hearkens back to Tomalty’s childhood – the artist, raised in a strong Irish household, played hockey growing up, and later for the Montreal Royals.
