On his inspiration for this piece, Jay Contway writes:

“I was working for the Phillips Ranch when I was about 17. I borrowed a pair of wooly chaps from Burt Coon on a cold, miserable day. I rode across a small creek that was much deeper than I expected. The horse went in deep and I came off as we struggled to get out. Those chaps nearly drowned me. I made it to an old sheep shed and built a fire to dry out but that was just another mess. The manure was so deep that I couldn’t get the fire out. I dug forever. The old foreman said I should just have let the thing burn. That day was in my mind while I made this sculpture.”
