Note: Glenna Goodacre is an acclaimed American sculptor whose monumental public installations can be found in 25 U.S. states; from the powerful “Vietnam Women’s Memorial” (Washington D.C.) and “Irish Famine Memorial” (Philadelphia, PA) to the dynamic and whimsical “The Puddle Jumpers” (Montgomery, AL).

This rare piece “Fry Bread” is both a tribute to Native American culture as well as a remembrance – of a story of pain, perseverance and survival. In the 1860s thousands of Navajo were forced to make the “Long Walk” to New Mexico, where they were interned. The new land was challenging, and facing starvation the government provide the people with staples (like flour and lard). The women did the best they could with the meager rations and the tradition of fry bread began. Some say, it is a sacred tradition, to be consumed by the people until the earth has again become purified.
