signed; titled on backing verso
Provenance note: This painting was acquired directly from George Pepper by the parents of the current consignor, who were friends of the artist. Attached, verso, is a Christmas card, depicting one of Pepper’s works, with a note signed by the artist’s wife, artist Kathleen Daly Pepper. This painting has been in the collection of one family, passed down by descent.
George Douglas Pepper exhibited with the Group of Seven, and was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters. Pepper married fellow artist Kathleen Frances Daly in 1929. In 1931 they built a log cabin cottage (now the Chalet Pepper-Daly) in Saint-Urbain (Charlevoix County). This area would hold great significance for the artists. It became a gathering place for other artists, who would often visit and paint in the area. While the Studio Building in Toronto served as the Peppers’ base for 17 years and they painted extensively throughout Canada, they made the cottage and Saint-Urbain their summer residence, and often painted the local landscape and inhabitants. Their former home in Saint-Urbain is now designated as a historic monument.
