From a very young age, David Blackwood would go fishing off the coast of Labrador with his father in the family schooner, The Flora S. Nickerson. Captain Edward Blackwood, son of Captain Albert Blackwood, came from a family with a long seafaring history, and hoped for his son to follow in the family tradition. While David Blackwood found his passion in art, his personal experiences, along with the dramatic tales he heard growing up, bring authenticity and powerful imagery to his work. Blackwood brings the Flora S. Nickerson to life many times over the years. Additional examples of this subject include: “The Flora S. Nickerson Down on the Labrador” (1978); “The Flora S. Nickerson in the Labrador Sea” (1996); “Wreck of the Nickerson” (1993); and “Loss of the Flora S. Nickerson” (1993).
