Dale Auger

Canadian, Cree [1958-2008]

Dale Auger, born in High Prairie, Alberta, was a Sakaw Cree artist and storyteller from the Bigstone Cree Nation in northern Alberta and had a huge influence in both art and education until his untimely death from cancer in 2008 at the age of 50.

Dale Auger was a renowned artist whose vibrant acrylic and oil paintings are held in many notable public and private collections around the world. Through his strong, intensely colourful images, he told a story of his ancestors and the Native spiritual life.

Auger was an accomplished motivational speaker, playwright, comedian, and author of an award-winning children’s book, “Mwakwa – Talks to the Loon”, for which he was awarded Aboriginal Children’s Book of the Year in 2006; and received the 2007 R. Ross Annett Award for Children’s Literature, along with many other honors.

Dr. Auger embodied the spirit of the loon which could live in many worlds. Dale studied at Grant MacEwan College, for which he was awarded the Alumni of the Year, Mount Royal College, Alberta College of Art and Design, and the University of Calgary, where he completed his Bachelor of Education in 1992; Master in Education in 1996; and, ultimately, his PhD. in Education in 1999.

He made his home in Bragg Creek, Alberta and was posthumously honoured as the 2009 inductee into the Western Art Show’s Hall of Fame at the world-famous Calgary Stampede.

Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist in 2006.

Note: This work is illustrated on page 144 of “Medicine Paint, The Art of Dale Auger” (Dale Auger, with foreword by Mary-Beth Laviolette; Heritage House, 2009). A copy of the book accompanies the painting. The caption within the book, referencing the image, reads:

“We once had a medicine man in our camp. We knew him only as the Traveller. He was tall and charming and had great powers. They say he had the ability to travel to the future, and as proof of his travels he would bring back with him different medicine from different times.”

This was a favourite work of Dale Auger. The artist, in discussing this piece with the purchaser (and friend), indicated that in some ways this was a self-portrait. Auger related that he would often dream of travelling in time, and would contemplate how strange it would be if he could bring everyday items from today back in time. He theorized that even items we casually discard would be transformed, holding power and value in another life and time.

Title: CALLER OF THE MEDICINE LODGE

Date: 1998

Medium: acrylic on canvas

Dimensions: 36 x 36 in. (91.4 x 91.4 cm)

Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist.
Note: This work is illustrated on page 34 of “Medicine Paint, The Art of Dale Auger” (Dale Auger/foreword by Mary-Beth Laviolette; Heritage House, 2009). On the inspiration for this powerful image, Auger recalled:
“I had a dream one time that I was the Caller of the Medicine Lodge. It was my duty to call on all the people, so that the ceremony could begin. Everything was just right as I stood at the entrance to the lodge with the staff stick over my shoulder and my head held high. I started my journey into the lodge. I felt powerful. ‘In the Creator’s name’, I said, ‘we must direct ourselves to the Creator, because it is the Creator that gives us life. It is the Creator that gives us knowledge.’ I felt so good in that dream. I felt so good that I didn’t want to leave it.”
