Canadian [1916-1992]
Clifford Robinson, born in Bassano in 1916, took his early art training at the Provincial Institute of Technology in Calgary and the Banff School of Fine Art with some of Alberta’s most formative artists and educators. Training under A.C. Leighton, H.G. Glyde, Marion Nicoll, and perhaps most notably, W.J. Phillips in printmaking, Robinson would go on to become a fixture in Alberta’s art scene in the 1930s and 40s.
Robinson is recognized for his focus on human subjects; his linocuts reflect a deep engagement with social and philosophical issues, conveyed through an expressive style that is noted for its emotional depth. He traveled extensively across North America and Europe and, in addition to his artistic practice, taught at both the Banff School of Fine Arts and the Vancouver School of Fine Arts, and was the first first Director of TV design for CBC Vancouver and Set Director for the First Vancouver International Festival. Robinson returned to Calgary later in life, and passed away there in 1992.
