In 1943 A.Y. Jackson accepted a summer teaching post at the Banff School of Fine Arts. Jackson would hold this position until 1949. A rugged outdoorsman, Jackson was no stranger to camping and hiking in the Rockies seeking inspiration.

Jackson took advantage of this setting, taking his students to many mountain locales as part of their studies. In the fall, he would often return alone to paint the fall colours and further explore.

This painting depicts an area of Sunshine Meadows not far from the Ski Lodge.
