It is believed that Alexander Loemans was born in the Netherlands and trained in France, prior to immigrating to North America (circa 1880). He spent several years in the Northeastern United States, painting in the style of the Hudson River School. He was active in Canada by 1882, where he is known to have resided in Toronto, Hamilton, Montreal and finally Vancouver. He exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy and the Art Association of Montreal (among others) and is included in several public collections (eg. Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec and National Gallery of Canada).
